Story & heritage

The garment-dyed crewneck sweatshirt is the everyday face of Stone Island — a plain cotton jumper made unmistakable by one thing: the compass badge buttoned onto the left arm. That badge, a nautical star set inside a compass on a green, yellow and black cloth patch, is the brand's whole identity in miniature, worn on the upper sleeve since the label began.

Stone Island was founded by designer Massimo Osti in 1982 in Ravarino, Italy, around an approach oriented to science instead of fashion — garment performance, material research and dyeing rather than seasonal trends. The sweatshirt is where that obsession meets the most ordinary garment in the wardrobe: a piece dyed after it is sewn, so the colour sinks unevenly into the cloth and the badge can be dyed to match or contrast the body.

Materials & craft

The crewneck is built from a heavy organic cotton fleece and garment dyed — coloured as a finished garment rather than as yardage — which gives the surface its slightly faded, lived-in depth and a colour that is never perfectly flat. Flat-knit ribbing finishes the cuffs and hem, and the signature detail sits on the upper left sleeve: the buttoned-on compass patch, detachable by design and worn on the arm rather than the chest.

How to choose & style

The crewneck is the entry point to Stone Island — quiet enough to read as a plain sweatshirt until you clock the badge. Black and the muted garment-dyed neutrals are the most versatile and the most in keeping with the brand's understated register; the brighter dye lots lean into the football-casual heritage. Wear it under one of the house's shell jackets or on its own; the half-detachable badge means the brand signals at a glance without any front logo.
