Story & heritage
Vans describes the Sk8-Hi as Style 38, introduced in 1978 and the second shoe to wear the Sidestripe. The higher cut brought extra ankle protection from rogue boards while preserving the graphic language of the Old Skool.
That combination makes the Sk8-Hi both practical skate gear and a visual pillar of Vans: taller, more protective, but still unmistakably tied to the side-stripe family.
Materials & craft
The official black/white Sk8-Hi uses durable suede and canvas uppers, a reinforced toe cap, supportive padded collar, and rubber waffle outsole.
Its padded high collar is the key difference: it frames the ankle and gives the stripe a longer canvas to cut across.
How to choose & style
Let the collar show with cropped trousers, shorts, or cuffed denim; or tuck it under wider pants for a cleaner black-and-white stripe hit.
