Mohapatra learned to sew on his mother's machine in Odisha, practising on vintage saris, before moving to America in 1996 and earning a master's at Utah State University; he then enrolled at New York's Fashion Institute of Technology and worked with Halston and J. Mendel. After a decade creating J. Mendel's ready-to-wear, he left in 2008 to establish his own house, going on to present hundreds of collections of luxury women's ready-to-wear, couture and fur in New York, Mumbai, New Delhi, Beijing and beyond.
His store and atelier sit on Duane Street in TriBeCa. He has dressed First Lady Michelle Obama, designed opera costumes for Glimmerglass and the Washington National Opera, and given back through hand-woven silk-sari collections supporting weavers in his home state. He was elected to the Council of Fashion Designers of America in 2010 and was a finalist for the 2014 International Woolmark Prize.
