Carl F. Bucherer

Lucerne watchmaking with a peripheral heart — the floating rotor and tourbillon that set the house apart.

Carl F. Bucherer
Re-checked daily
Founded in Lucerne in 1888 by Carl Friedrich Bucherer, the house was held by the founding family for over a century — one of the oldest Swiss watchmakers continuously in family hands until 2023.

From a first boutique in Lucerne, Carl F. Bucherer grew into one of the top three Swiss producers of certified chronometers by 1968. Jörg G. Bucherer, the third generation, took over in 1976 and repositioned the brand around the Patravi (2001) and Manero collections. Its 2007 acquisition of a Sainte-Croix movement house led to the CFB A1000 — an automatic caliber with a peripherally mounted rotor and, later, a floating peripheral tourbillon.

The watches span functions from flyback chronograph to perpetual calendar, and have appeared on screen in John Wick and Deadpool 2. In August 2023, Bucherer AG was acquired by Rolex; the brand continues to trade under its own name and operate independently.

Carl F. Bucherer shopping FAQ

Are Carl F. Bucherer watches worth it?+

Among collectors the brand is often called underappreciated. It is a true manufacture making its own movements, and enthusiasts rate the quality and finishing as worth the price, frequently comparing it to Omega and IWC on movement innovation. If you want Swiss watchmaking with a genuinely distinctive calibre rather than a household name, it makes a strong case.

How does the Carl F. Bucherer Manero Peripheral compare to a Rolex or Omega?+

It plays a different game. The Manero Peripheral runs the COSC-certified CFB A2050 calibre with a peripheral rotor, a winding design Bucherer claims to have first produced in series. Rather than chasing a Speedmaster or a Submariner head-on, its appeal is that signature peripheral-rotor movement, which collectors note has no direct equivalent at its peers.

What is the peripheral rotor in Carl F. Bucherer watches?+

It is the brand's signature engineering. The in-house CFB A1000 calibre was the first reliably functioning automatic movement with a peripherally mounted power source, where a geared ring and a tungsten mass encircle the mechanism instead of a central rotor. Discarding the central rotor allows a thinner watch and an unobstructed view of the movement.

What is Carl F. Bucherer best known for?+

Swiss luxury mechanical watches and its peripheral-rotor movements. Based in Lucerne, the house makes men's and women's mechanical watches across the Patravi and Manero lines, and its calibres are distinguished by complications such as the chronograph, flyback, tourbillon, big date and moon phases.

Where is Carl F. Bucherer from and when was it founded?+

It is one of Switzerland's older watch houses. In 1888, Carl Friedrich Bucherer established his first boutique selling watches and jewellery in Lucerne, Switzerland. Production today is centred on the company's factory in Lengnau, in the canton of Bern.

Who owns Carl F. Bucherer now?+

For most of its history it was family-owned, run into its third generation under chairman Jörg G. Bucherer. In August 2023 the parent Bucherer AG was bought by Rolex. The watch brand was set to continue trading under its own name and operate independently, with management unchanged.

What are the main Carl F. Bucherer collections?+

The watches are divided into five core collections: Patravi, Manero, Heritage, Adamavi, and the women's lines Pathos and Alacria. The Patravi was launched in 2001 when the brand was repositioned, and the Manero family carries much of the in-house peripheral-rotor technology.

How can I authenticate a Carl F. Bucherer watch?+

Since 2014, the brand's manufacture movements have been protected against counterfeiting with a special laser signature. Developed with the Swiss firm Mimotec, the CLR-LIGA process imprints a unique mark using diffractive nano-structuring that can only be read with a specialised laser scanner. From that year, all models carry the technology.

Has Carl F. Bucherer appeared in films?+

Yes, notably on a famous wrist. Keanu Reeves wears a Carl F. Bucherer Manero AutoDate in John Wick (2014) and its 2017 sequel, and Ian McShane wears one in John Wick: Chapter 3. The brand also features in Deadpool 2 and Atomic Blonde.

Is a Carl F. Bucherer a good investment?+

Views are mixed but lean positive on value. Collectors note the Manero and Patravi manufacture pieces have held value better than some mid-tier peers thanks to their technical distinctiveness, and the 2023 Rolex acquisition renewed market interest. As with most watches, treat it as something you buy to wear and enjoy first, with resale a secondary consideration.

What is the CFB T3000 floating tourbillon?+

It is one of the brand's headline complications. Launched in 2018, the CFB T3000 calibre pairs the peripheral rotor with a tourbillon that appears to float, because its cage is supported peripherally by three ceramic ball bearings rather than mounted in the main plate or a bridge. It debuted in the Manero Tourbillon DoublePeripheral.
