Re-checked daily
Founded in Boston in 1952 as Eastern Canvas Products, Eastpak built bags for the U.S. military before turning to the consumer market in 1976 — and went on to claim the American college backpack of the 1980s.

Bernard Godfrey started the company in 1952 making safety equipment for the U.S. Army; the direction changed when his grandson Mark Goldman joined in 1976, relaunched the line as a consumer brand and showed the first packs at a Chicago trade fair in 1977. By the 1980s and early 1990s Eastpak owned a market-leading share of the East Coast college market.

In 1985 it brought bright colours and prints to the range and became the first bag brand to offer a lifetime warranty. Eastpak entered the wheeled-luggage market in 1999 and joined the VF Corporation portfolio in 2000, alongside JanSport, The North Face and Kipling. Its design collaborations run from Raf Simons to Kris Van Assche and Walter Van Beirendonck.

Eastpak shopping FAQ

Are Eastpak backpacks worth it?+

For an everyday carry meant to last, many owners say yes. Eastpak was the first bag brand to offer a lifetime product warranty, and that long-haul confidence is a big part of the appeal. You are buying a backpack built to be lived in for years rather than replaced each season, which is where the value tends to show.

What exactly does Eastpak's 30-year warranty cover?+

Eastpak introduced what it calls a lifetime warranty, though for legal reasons it is set at 30 years. It is designed to cover material and manufacturing defects rather than ordinary wear and tear, so it is best understood as a guarantee against the bag failing on you, not a promise to replace a pack you have simply worn out. Always check the current terms before you rely on it.

Which Eastpak should I buy first?+

If you want the bag the brand is best known for, start with one of its classic backpacks. Eastpak's range spans shoulder bags, backpacks, duffel bags, travel gear and accessories, in a large choice of styles, colours, prints and fabrics. Pick the size and shape for your daily load, then enjoy that the same model usually comes in dozens of finishes.

How does Eastpak compare to JanSport?+

They sit in the same VF Corporation family, since Eastpak joined brands like JanSport, The North Face, Kipling, Lee and Wrangler when VF acquired it in 2000. In practice shoppers tend to weigh Eastpak's durable, style-led reputation and long warranty against JanSport's value and organisation. If you want a bag to keep for years, Eastpak's warranty story is the differentiator.

Where did Eastpak come from and is it really American?+

Yes. Eastpak is an American lifestyle brand founded in Boston, Massachusetts. It began in 1952 as Eastern Canvas Products USA, Inc., making bags and packs for the U.S. military, and only turned to the consumer market in 1976 under the Eastpak name. So the brand's roots are genuinely American, even though it is sold worldwide today.

Who founded Eastpak?+

Eastpak was founded in 1952 by Bernard Godfrey of Newton, Massachusetts, as Eastern Canvas Products USA Inc., later joined by his son William and partner Monte Goldman. The pivot to a consumer brand came when Goldman's son, Mark Goldman, joined in 1976, transforming the product line and launching the first range of bags and packs at a Chicago trade fair in 1977.

How did Eastpak go from military gear to a fashion staple?+

The company started out specialising in safety equipment for the U.S. Army, then changed direction in the 1970s toward consumers. In 1985 it introduced bright colours and prints, and through the 1980s and early 1990s it claimed a market-leading share of the U.S. East Coast college market. That move into bold, original style is what turned a utilitarian maker into a campus and lifestyle name.

Does Eastpak make luggage as well as backpacks?+

It does. Eastpak entered the luggage market in 1999 with the first wheeled trolley produced for the consumer market, and has since expanded into holdalls, two- and four-wheeled trolleys and a full range of travel gear from carry-on to larger sizes. Many styles add practical touches like laptop sleeves, organiser pouches and expansion zips.

Has Eastpak collaborated with fashion designers?+

Yes, and it has a real track record here. In 2004 Eastpak partnered with Belgian designer Walter Van Beirendonck, and it has since produced collections with designers including Kris Van Assche, Christopher Shannon and Raf Simons, among many others. These collaborations are where the brand's utilitarian bags get a high-fashion twist, so they are worth watching if you want something less everyday.

Is Eastpak more popular in Europe or the US?+

Europe, by a wide margin today. Eastpak was first introduced to the European market in 1986 by the Frenchman Kostia Belkin, and decades later France is the brand's largest market. It relaunched into the US through its own e-commerce site in 2021, so depending on where you shop, availability and the range you see can differ.

What is the Padded Pak'r and why is it so well known?+

The Padded Pak'r is the silhouette most people picture when they think of Eastpak, a simple, padded everyday backpack that has become the brand's signature. Its appeal sits squarely on Eastpak's core promise: a durable, no-nonsense bag offered in a huge range of colours and prints, and backed by the brand's long 30-year warranty against defects.
