Esprit

From a San Francisco VW bus to the world — the 'Real People' brand since 1968.

Esprit
Re-checked daily
Founded in 1968 by Susie and Doug Tompkins — also co-founders of The North Face — Esprit began selling clothes out of a VW bus, with their San Francisco apartment as headquarters.

In 1979 the brand brought on graphic designer John Casado, who had designed the first Macintosh's trademark, to create its stencil-effect logo. Its 1985 'Real People Campaign', shot by Oliviero Toscani, featured Esprit's own employees, architects and designers — among them Memphis Group founder Ettore Sottsass, who also built the brand's European headquarters.

Now incorporated in Bermuda with headquarters in Hong Kong, Esprit operates across more than 30 markets. After years of difficulty the company returned to profitability in 2022 and reintroduced itself to New York with an experiential store in Soho.

Esprit shopping FAQ

Is Esprit still worth buying today?+

It depends on what you want from it. Esprit's appeal has always been clean, casual sportswear with a recognisable identity, and after five years of losses the company returned to profitability in late 2022 on a billion dollars of revenue. That said, several of its regional operations have struggled badly since, so the safest approach is to judge the specific pieces and stockist in front of you rather than the brand's broader fortunes.

Is Esprit good quality?+

Esprit built its name on dependable casual clothing, and at its best the label sits comfortably alongside pricier brands. Its modern relaunch leaned hard into product quality, with a pared-back range of seasonless staples meant to feel considered rather than disposable. As with any large fashion house, quality can vary by line, so it pays to check the garment itself.

What is the story behind the Esprit stencil logo?+

The famous stencil-effect Esprit wordmark was created in 1979 by graphic designer John Casado, who also designed the branding for the first Macintosh computer. That logo became one of the most recognisable symbols in fashion through the 1980s and is still central to the brand's identity today.

What was Esprit's Real People campaign?+

Debuting in 1985, the Real People Campaign is the brand's most legendary moment. Photographed by Oliviero Toscani, it featured Esprit's own employees, architects and designers instead of professional models, including Italian architect Ettore Sottsass of the Memphis Group. It defined the brand's progressive, art-forward 1980s image.

Who founded Esprit?+

Esprit was founded in 1968 by Susie and Doug Tompkins, the same couple who co-founded The North Face. It began as their first clothing line, famously selling out of a VW bus with their San Francisco apartment serving as the original headquarters.

Where is Esprit from?+

Esprit started in San Francisco in 1968, but today it is a global company headquartered in North Point, Hong Kong, and incorporated in Bermuda. It also keeps major locations in Ratingen, Germany; Amsterdam; and New York City, and operates across more than 30 markets in Europe, Asia and the Americas.

What does Esprit make now?+

Its core is casual sportswear and everyday essentials for men, women and children, extending into swimwear, underwear, activewear, bags and shoes. From 2023 the brand built around a tight seasonless selection of eight pieces, including a multisystem parka, a soft suit, a tracksuit and chunky logo knits. There is also an Esprit Home range covering furniture, textiles and decor.

Did famous designers shape the Esprit brand?+

Yes, and unusually so for a fashion label. Architect and designer Ettore Sottsass set the visual direction for Esprit's retail stores and built its European headquarters in Düsseldorf, while figures such as Antonio Citterio and Norman Foster also contributed to the brand. That design pedigree is a big part of why Esprit's 1980s identity still resonates.

Why was Esprit such a big deal in the 1980s?+

It combined a striking visual identity with a genuinely progressive marketing approach, anchored by the Casado stencil logo and the 1985 Real People Campaign. Backed by serious design talent and bold imagery, Esprit became one of the defining casual brands of the decade, which is why so much of its current appeal trades on that heritage.

Is Esprit available in the United States?+

Its US presence is currently very limited. After attempting a comeback, including pop-ups and a Soho store space in New York, Esprit's US operations filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in October 2024. If you are shopping in the US, availability is restricted, so verify the seller and stockist carefully.
