Esteban Cortazar

Sculptural ease with a Colombian heart — the designer Vogue called the most uninhibited showing in Paris.

Esteban Cortazar
Re-checked daily
Born in Bogotá in 1984 and raised in Miami, Esteban Cortázar became one of the youngest designers ever to show at New York Fashion Week — a self-expression learned on the South Beach of Versace and Todd Oldham.

He showed his sketches to Todd Oldham at thirteen and presented in New York at an age that opened doors and built his name. In 2007 he moved to Paris to lead the House of Emanuel Ungaro, and he has lived in the city ever since.

In 2012 Natalie Massenet invited him to create capsule collections for Net-a-Porter, which relaunched his eponymous label. His style is slick and sculptural — poet shirting, circle hems, sliced leather and equestrian hardware — a body restricted and a body free. Vogue called him the most uninhibited designer showing in Paris.

Esteban Cortazar shopping FAQ

Is Esteban Cortázar worth buying?+

If you want fluid, modern eveningwear with a clear point of view, yes. Cortázar's work has earned a cult following for its take on femininity, modernity and luxury, and Vogue has called him the most uninhibited designer showing in Paris. The pieces are designed around a contrast the designer returns to again and again: a body restricted and a body free. Choose for the silhouette and the drape, which is where the label is strongest.

What is Esteban Cortázar's signature style?+

Slick, sculptural lines achieved with ease, grace and flow. His collections often juxtapose two ideas, a body restricted and a body free, using devices like poet shirting, circle hems, sliced leather and equestrian hardware to make women appear assured, bold and austere. It is eveningwear built on movement rather than stiffness.

Who is Esteban Cortázar?+

He is a Colombian-American fashion designer, born May 17, 1984, in Bogotá, Colombia, and raised in Miami, Florida. He is one of the youngest designers ever to present at New York Fashion Week. His parents are the Colombian painter Valentino Cortázar and the British former jazz singer Dominique Vaughan, a cross-continental upbringing he treats as a direct influence on his work.

How does Cortázar's Colombian heritage show up in his designs?+

He treats his work as an homage to it. Cortázar integrates Colombian symbols and iconography, such as the country's flag and emblems, into his designs, and he constantly references Colombia and its overseas communities, including the one in Miami where he grew up. That heritage is a thread through the brand rather than an occasional motif.

How did Esteban Cortázar get his start so young?+

Through early mentorship and a precocious eye. At age 13 he showed his fashion sketches to designer Todd Oldham, who became his mentor. In 1999 his early sketches caught the eye of Kal Ruttenstein, Bloomingdale's late fashion director, who later picked up his first collection. He graduated from Miami's Design and Architecture High School in 2004 and became a member of the Council of Fashion Designers of America in 2006.

What was Cortázar's role at the House of Ungaro?+

It was the chapter that took him to Europe. In 2007 Cortázar moved to Paris to lead the House of Emanuel Ungaro, immersing himself in one of Europe's fashion icons. He has resided in Paris ever since, and the move broadened the reach of a designer who had built his name in New York and Miami.

How was the Esteban Cortázar brand relaunched?+

Through an unusual partnership with an online retailer. In 2012, Natalie Massenet approached Cortázar to create capsule collections for Net-a-Porter, and that process ushered in the relaunch of his eponymous brand. The work earned international acclaim and a loyal following, and his collections went on to be stocked at retailers including Bergdorf Goodman, Barneys, Browns, The Webster and Lane Crawford.

What is 'Donde Esteban'?+

It is Cortázar's newer venture. In 2024 he introduced Donde Esteban, a line specializing in unisex resort wear. It extends his eveningwear sensibility into a more relaxed, vacation-minded register while keeping the fluid, modern lines he is known for.

Did Cortázar change how fashion is sold?+

He pushed at the runway-to-store gap. In 2014 he devised a strategy to shorten the interval between the runway and the store without compromising craftsmanship, confirming orders and beginning production before his shows rather than after. The approach started a conversation that has fed into wider rethinking of the industry's calendar.

Where can I buy Esteban Cortázar, and is resale a good route?+

His collections are stocked in stores worldwide, with the brand's relaunch tied closely to Net-a-Porter and pieces also carried at the likes of Bergdorf Goodman and The Webster. Because the eveningwear is distinctive and seasonal, earlier pieces circulate steadily on resale platforms, which can be a smart way to find a particular dress or a past collection at a gentler price.
