Gai Mattiolo

Gaetano "Gai" Mattiolo is an Italian fashion designer, born in Rome on 23 December 1968. After finishing the liceo scientifico he opened his own fashion house in 1987, funded by his parents, and presented his first ready-to-wear collection at the MODIT event in Milan that same year. He built a reputation for glamorous, colourful Italian womenswear with an unmistakable theatrical streak.

His style is defined by bright colours, glamour and lavish attention to detail, a sensibility close enough to Gianni Versace's that he was often referred to as a new Versace. The label became known for opulent, attention-grabbing eveningwear rather than quiet minimalism. The buttons. Mattiolo's trademark is his attention to detail, especially buttons often made of gold or gems, which became a genuine signature of the house. A remarkably starry list. Mattiolo dressed Queen Sofia of Spain, Lauren Bacall, Susan Sarandon, Halle Berry, Cher, Ivana Trump, Mariah Carey, Ursula Andress, Sharon Stone and the Italian icon Raffaella Carrà, among others. That roster of royalty and Hollywood and Italian stars is a big part of why the name carried such glamour at its peak.

Yes. In 2000 Mattiolo designed four chasubles, the vestments worn during Mass, for Pope John Paul II. It is one of the most distinctive moments in the house's history and a measure of the standing the designer reached at his height, moving from red-carpet eveningwear to ecclesiastical dress.

The business spread well past its couture core over the years. It included the limited-edition Gai Mattiolo Royale line, Schoking Gai for larger sizes, Gai Mattiolo Couture Textiles, plus footwear, accessories and perfume lines. So the name covered a full lifestyle range rather than gowns alone, which is worth knowing when you come across vintage pieces under different sub-labels.

It was a closely held affair. Mattiolo's artistic collaborator was his partner, Attilio Vaccari, and the company itself was managed by his sister, Giada. Gai Mattiolo Couture was at one point produced by the Mariella Burani Fashion Group, with jeans by the Emilian Group, before the company reacquired all its licenses in 2003. The label was very much a family-run, designer-led house.

The house lost momentum in the mid-2000s: Mattiolo did not present new collections in 2006 and 2007 and began closing stores, and by 2008 he was seeking financing. In December 2008 he was charged with fraudulent bankruptcy and embezzlement along with several company directors, but in 2015 all parties were acquitted of all charges. The label did not return to its former scale, and its most recent collection was released in 2020.

Not in any active, regular way. After launching Gai Mattiolo Wedding in 2011, the house's most recent collection was released in 2020, and it has not maintained the seasonal rhythm of an ongoing label. In practice that means the name lives largely through vintage and resale today, so most people encounter it secondhand rather than in a new-season store.

It can be, if you love bold, glamorous Italian eveningwear and want a piece with a real story. Because the house leaned into bright colour, lavish detail and those signature gold-or-gem buttons, a Mattiolo gown carries a distinctive maximalist character you do not get from quieter labels. Since the brand is no longer running at scale, vintage and resale are the main way in, so buy from sellers who can confirm authenticity and condition.
