The house made its name through invention: the first non-corrosive nylon zipper, Velcro closures on waterproof garments, hand-taped seams, and Gore-Tex foul-weather gear that went through more than 22,000 hours of round-the-world sea testing before its 1994 debut. Its Consort Jacket was worn by Sir Francis Chichester on the first single-handed circumnavigation by the clipper route in 1966–67, and its oilskins by Sir Robin Knox-Johnston in 1969. Strzelecki — "Mr Henri" — was made an MBE in 1985.
Off the water the brand found a second life in style, adopted by Milan's Paninaro scene in 1984 and the Madchester era, and named UK Fashion Brand of the Year in 1997. After financial trouble, the brand and trademarks were sold to Sweden's Aligro Group in 2018 and acquired again by Monte Rosa Capital in 2022; it remains the official performance clothing partner of America's Cup team Ineos Britannia.
