Story & heritage
IWC's own Portofino journal notes that the Portofino name has been used for an entire line since 1984, when the collection established its identity around classic simplicity and pure design. The modern Portofino Automatic keeps that brief intact with almost no visual noise beyond the Roman numerals at 12 and 6 and a discreet date display.
Where many IWC icons lean on technical bravado, the Portofino builds its reputation through proportion and restraint. It is one of the brand's clearest statements that elegance can be engineered too.
Materials & craft
This version uses a 40-millimetre case in 18 ct 5N gold, a harmonious light dial, automatic movement and a brown leather strap. Official IWC copy emphasizes the three-hand layout and date display, while Goldsmiths highlights the coastal inspiration and the warm pairing of gold case, cream dial and rose-gold-toned markers.
How to choose & style
The Portofino is most convincing when worn lightly: open-collar shirt, soft tailoring, knitted polo, suede loafers, summer-weight wool. Rose gold and brown leather make it warmer and more relaxed than a strict formal watch, so it thrives in daylight wardrobes and understated evening dressing.
