Story & heritage
The Portugieser line traces back to the late 1930s, when IWC created an unusually large wristwatch with pocket-watch precision for Portuguese clients. The modern Portugieser Chronograph became the collection's defining complication in 1998, and IWC still describes it as the most coveted member of the family.
What keeps the watch iconic is its balance: Arabic numerals, leaf-style hands, recessed totalizers and the printed quarter-second scale give it the poise of a classical dress watch while preserving a distinctly technical IWC character.
Materials & craft
This execution pairs a 41-millimetre stainless-steel case with a silver-plated dial, blue feuille hands and a blue alligator strap. Goldsmiths notes the IWC-manufactured 69355 calibre and the visible internal column-wheel construction, while IWC highlights the peripheral precision scale printed on the inner flange for high-legibility timing.
How to choose & style
The Portugieser Chronograph wears best when treated as a tailored everyday watch rather than a strict black-tie piece. White or silver dials with blue accents sit naturally with navy suiting, pale shirting and fine-gauge knitwear; the long, open dial keeps it refined even when the rest of the outfit is relaxed.
