Re-checked daily
Laura Biagiotti (1943–2017) was an Italian fashion designer and founder of the House of Biagiotti, one of the largest fashion houses in Italy, who staged her first fashion show in 1972.

Raised in Rome by a dressmaker mother who designed Alitalia's uniforms, Biagiotti abandoned an archaeology degree for fashion, working alongside her mother before opening her first store in Florence. In April 1988 she became the first Italian designer to present a collection in China.

The house spans women's wear, men's wear, accessories and watches, and Biagiotti was honoured by the President of Italy in 1995 and with China's Marco Polo award for promoting fashion there. Her daughter, Lavinia Biagiotti Cigna, joined the family business in 1997 and became vice president in 2005.

Laura Biagiotti shopping FAQ

Is Laura Biagiotti worth buying into?+

For lovers of Italian design heritage, it carries real pedigree. The House of Biagiotti is listed among the largest fashion houses in Italy, founded by a designer celebrated enough to receive national honours for her contribution to fashion. If you value softly tailored, distinctly Italian womenswear with a serious legacy behind it, the label rewards the attention.

Where should I start with Laura Biagiotti?+

The brand's heart has always been its women's wear, which is where Laura Biagiotti built her name from her first fashion show in 1972. Today the House of Biagiotti also spans men's wear, accessories and watches, so you can branch out once you know the aesthetic. Begin with the womenswear to understand the house's signature ease and elegance.

Who was Laura Biagiotti, the designer behind the house?+

Laura Biagiotti (1943 to 2017) was an Italian fashion designer and the founder of the House of Biagiotti. Born in Rome, she grew up around her mother Delia's atelier, abandoned archaeology studies at Rome University to pursue fashion, and went into business with her future husband Gianni Cigna, opening her first store in Florence. Her first fashion show followed in 1972.

Is the House of Biagiotti still run by the family?+

Yes, it has stayed in the family line. Laura's daughter, Lavinia Biagiotti Cigna, entered the family business in 1997 and became the company's vice president in 2005. That continuity keeps the house tied to its founder's vision rather than being absorbed into an anonymous group.

When and where was the brand founded?+

Laura Biagiotti launched her own path in fashion in Italy, holding her first fashion show in 1972. The roots run deeper still: she trained from a young age at her mother's dressmaking atelier in Rome before partnering with Gianni Cigna and opening her debut store in Florence. From there grew one of the largest fashion houses in Italy.

What does Laura Biagiotti actually make?+

The House of Biagiotti's products include women's wear, men's wear, accessories and watches. Womenswear is the founding pillar and the clearest expression of the house's relaxed Italian elegance. The accessories and watches let you buy into the label at a more approachable scale.

Why is Laura Biagiotti so respected in Italian fashion?+

Beyond the clothes, the recognition is striking. In 1995 she received an award from the President of Italy for her contribution to fashion, and Italy even issued a postage stamp bearing her name in 2002. That level of national honour underscores how central she is to the story of modern Italian fashion.

Did Laura Biagiotti have a special connection to China?+

She was a genuine pioneer there. Biagiotti moved to Beijing and, in April 1988, became the first Italian designer to present a collection in China. She later received the Marco Polo award from the Chinese government for promoting fashion in China, making her a notable bridge between Italian design and the Chinese market.

How does Laura Biagiotti sit among other Italian houses?+

It belongs in the upper tier of Italian fashion, explicitly counted among the largest fashion houses in the country. Where some rivals chase loud spectacle, Biagiotti is bound up with refined, distinctly Roman elegance and an enduring founder's legacy. It is a name for those who prize Italian craft heritage over hype.

Where is the House of Biagiotti based?+

Its spiritual home is the Roman countryside. From 1980 until her death in 2017, Laura Biagiotti lived and worked at the restored 11th-century Marco Simone Castle outside Rome, sharing it with her husband Gianni Cigna until his death in 1996. That castle is inseparable from the house's identity and its Roman character.

How should I care for Laura Biagiotti pieces?+

Treat them as the considered Italian garments they are: follow the individual care label closely, since fabrics and finishes vary across womenswear, menswear and accessories. Gentle handling, proper storage and respecting any dry-clean guidance will protect both the drape and the longevity. When in doubt, err toward the most delicate option the label allows.
