In 1906 the house opened its first boutique at 22 Place Vendôme, across from the Hôtel Ritz, where it remains a fixture of French high jewelry. Renée Puissant took the artistic direction in 1926, working with draftsman René Sim Lacaze, and the house went on to make crowns for royalty — Queen Nazli of Egypt in the 1930s and Empress Farah Pahlavi in 1966, the latter set with emeralds, rubies, pearls and 1,469 diamonds chosen from the Imperial Treasury of Iran.
Van Cleef & Arpels opened its New York flagship at 744 Fifth Avenue in 1940, where it still stands, and was acquired by Richemont in 1999. Today it operates 155 stores worldwide, and its jewelry has been worn by Grace Kelly, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Princess Diana and Elizabeth Taylor. In 2024 Nicolas Bos, head of the house since 2013, was appointed CEO of Richemont.
