Uniqlo — a contraction of unique clothing — is a Japanese designer and retailer focused on casual wear, opened in 1984 in Hiroshima as the Unique Clothing Warehouse.

Run by Tadashi Yanai, who joined his father's company in 1972, the brand became part of Fast Retailing in 1991 and adopted its SPA private-label model in 1997. A partnership with Toray Industries produced its signature fabrics — Heattech, launched in 2003 and past 1.5 billion units sold, and Airism in 2012 — and the brand has long differentiated itself from fast fashion through quality and permanent ranges.

Uniqlo now operates 2,512 stores, including 784 in Japan and 881 in mainland China, with Clare Waight Keller as creative director. It is known for designs using licensed works by artists such as Andy Warhol, Pablo Picasso and Keith Haring, and for past design collaborations including Jil Sander.

Uniqlo shopping FAQ

Is Uniqlo worth it?+

Uniqlo is widely seen as strong value: a Japanese retailer focused on casual wear that delivers solid construction and innovative fabrics at accessible prices. Although its products have been described as fast fashion, the company deliberately differentiates itself through quality and permanent, non-trend-driven selections. For dependable everyday basics with a clever technical edge, it earns the praise.

Is Uniqlo good quality?+

For its price range Uniqlo is consistently well regarded, leaning on its LifeWear idea of simple, functional, long-lasting clothing rather than fast trends. Innovations like Heattech and AIRism, plus durable basics, anchor that reputation. It is not luxury, but it sits a clear notch above typical fast fashion in construction and fabric thinking.

What is Uniqlo Heattech, and is it good?+

Heattech is Uniqlo's signature winter innerwear, introduced in 2003 and developed jointly with Toray Industries to absorb moisture from the body and convert it into heat. It became a huge commercial success, with cumulative sales exceeding 1.5 billion units by 2025. Reviewers love it for thin, lightweight warmth that layers well in cold climates.

What is the difference between Heattech and AIRism?+

They are seasonal opposites in Uniqlo's innerwear range. Heattech (2003) traps warmth for cold weather, while AIRism, launched in 2012, is summer innerwear made from polyester fibers one tenth the thickness of a human hair, designed for quick drying and staying cool. Both were developed with Toray and both became major hits, so choose Heattech for winter and AIRism for heat.

What does the name Uniqlo mean?+

Uniqlo is a shortened contraction of unique clothing, echoing its first store, the Unique Clothing Warehouse opened in Hiroshima in 1984. The spelling came from a happy accident: in 1988, during brand registration work in Hong Kong, a C was misread as a Q. Founder Tadashi Yanai liked the error and adopted Uniqlo across Japan.

When and where did Uniqlo start?+

Uniqlo traces back to a men's shop founded in Ube, Yamaguchi, by Hitoshi Yanai, later rebranded Ogori Shōji. The first true Uniqlo store, a unisex casual wear shop called Unique Clothing Warehouse, opened in June 1984 in Hiroshima, with Hitoshi's son Tadashi Yanai at the helm. That Japanese heritage still defines the brand.

Who owns Uniqlo?+

Uniqlo is a subsidiary of Fast Retailing, the company founded by the Yanai family, with about 20% owned by Tadashi Yanai, now the richest person in Japan. Yanai joined the family business in 1972 and built it into a global retailer operating thousands of stores. The brand remains firmly Japanese-controlled.

How does Uniqlo make its high-tech fabrics?+

Much of Uniqlo's fabric innovation comes from a deep partnership with Toray Industries that began in the late 1990s, with Toray setting up a division dedicated solely to Uniqlo. That collaboration produced the 1998 fleece campaign that drove a sales surge, then Heattech and AIRism. It is the engine behind the brand's reputation for functional, technical basics.

What were the +J and other designer lines at Uniqlo?+

Uniqlo has long blended affordable basics with high-design collaborations. In March 2009 it signed designer Jil Sander as creative director of its menswear and womenswear, a partnership that ran until 2011. The brand has also produced designs using licensed works by artists such as Andy Warhol, Pablo Picasso and Keith Haring.

Who is the creative director of Uniqlo now?+

Clare Waight Keller serves as the creative director of Uniqlo. She follows a tradition of bringing serious design talent into the brand, much as Jil Sander did during her earlier collaboration. Her role reflects Uniqlo's ambition to pair everyday accessibility with thoughtful design.

Has Uniqlo faced any labor controversy?+

Yes. Since 2011, reports including ones from the labor group SACOM have alleged long hours, low pay and poor conditions at suppliers' factories in China and Cambodia, with a 2016 report claiming such problems persisted. In 2019, workers in Uniqlo's Australian stores also described bullying and a toxic work culture. The company has at times pledged remedies, though investigators found the fixes only partially successful.

How should I care for Uniqlo basics so they last?+

With proper care most Uniqlo staples, especially jeans, outerwear and Heattech, can last several years. Wash innerwear gently and avoid high heat, since the technical fibers in Heattech and AIRism perform best when treated kindly. Following the label closely is the simplest way to protect both the fit and the fabric technology you paid for.
