Story & heritage

The Loulou is named for Loulou de la Falaise, the jewellery designer and muse who worked alongside Yves Saint Laurent from the early 1970s and helped shape the house's bohemian-aristocratic glamour. The bag is an ode to her — a soft, chevron-quilted shoulder bag closed by an oversized Cassandre, the interlocking YSL monogram drawn by graphic artist A. M. Cassandre for the house in the early 1960s.

Introduced under creative director Anthony Vaccarello, the Loulou quickly became the most commercial handbag in the line — the everyday Saint Laurent that translates the house's evening-glamour codes into a bag you can carry from morning to night. Its quilted body and prominent monogram made it instantly legible as Saint Laurent without a single visible logo word.

Materials & craft

The Loulou is built in Y-quilted leather — the quilting stitched in a chevron that mirrors the lines of the Cassandre monogram itself — over a soft, slouchy body. Smooth calfskin reads sleek and modern; the suede versions are plusher and more tactile. The Cassandre clasp is cast in metal and finished in silver-, gold- or matte black-tone, and the bag hangs from a sliding leather-and-chain strap that can be doubled for the shoulder or dropped long for crossbody carry. Made in Italy.

How to choose & style

The Small is the consensus everyday size — roomy enough for the daily essentials, dressy enough to carry into the evening. Black with silver or black hardware is the most versatile, leaning into Saint Laurent's rock-and-roll register; gold hardware warms it toward the house's 1970s glamour. The Toy is the going-out option, worn crossbody and almost weightless. Whichever scale, the Loulou wants soft tailoring and a sharp shoulder — it finishes a look rather than competing with it.
