Re-checked daily
Alexis Bittar is an American jewelry designer who began selling on the streets of Soho and turned a single block of Lucite into a whole design language.

Born in Brooklyn in 1968 to antique-collector parents, Bittar started early — selling vintage jewelry on St. Mark's as a teenager, then buying his first Lucite in 1990 and teaching himself to hand-carve it. Dawn Mello of Bergdorf Goodman discovered his work in 1992, and Saks, the Museum of Modern Art and Harrods followed; in 1998 he designed Burberry's first ready-to-wear jewelry collection.

He was named CFDA Accessory Designer of the Year in 2010 and Brand of the Year by the Accessories Council in 2014. After stepping away in 2015, Bittar reacquired his eponymous brand from Brooks Brothers in 2021 and expanded it into handbags and home décor. His pieces have been worn by Beyoncé, Michelle Obama, Lady Gaga, Iris Apfel, Cher and Madonna.

Alexis Bittar shopping FAQ

Is Alexis Bittar jewelry worth it?+

Alexis Bittar's appeal lies in distinctive, artistic statement pieces rather than fine-jewellery prestige, so worth depends on what you want. The signature hand-carved Lucite designs are genuinely unusual and have a devoted following, which is much of the draw. If you love bold, sculptural accessories with a clear creative point of view, the brand delivers something hard to find elsewhere.

Is Alexis Bittar good quality jewelry?+

Reviews are mixed, so it helps to go in informed. The brand is celebrated for inventive, hand-finished designs, and many owners find the pieces well made and substantial. Others report inconsistency over time, so it is worth checking the specific piece. The strongest case for quality is its hand-craft heritage rather than mass production.

How is Alexis Bittar's Lucite jewelry made?+

The Lucite pieces are hand-carved and hand-painted, a process the designer pioneered himself. Alexis Bittar bought his first block of Lucite in 1990 and shut himself away to figure out how to carve it into the jewellery he imagined, drawing on hand-carving techniques he had learned working with antiques. That handmade origin remains the heart of the brand.

Who is Alexis Bittar?+

Alexis Bittar, born in 1968 in Brooklyn, is an American jewellery designer and the founder and CEO of his eponymous accessories brand. He began designing his own jewellery line in 1988 and started selling handmade Lucite pieces on the streets of Soho. His work was discovered in 1992 by Bergdorf Goodman's fashion director, Dawn Mello, which launched his career.

Where is Alexis Bittar jewelry designed?+

The brand is rooted in New York, where Bittar grew up and built his business. He opened his first boutique on Broome Street in 2004 and went on to open a total of 15 stores in the US. After relaunching, new boutiques were opened in New York City. The city is inseparable from the brand's identity.

Does Alexis Bittar still own his brand?+

Yes, again. He stepped away from the fashion industry in 2015 after the brand was sold, but he reacquired his eponymous label from Brooks Brothers in 2021 after they filed for bankruptcy. He is once more the full owner. Since the relaunch he has expanded the brand into handbags and home décor.

Has Alexis Bittar collaborated with other fashion houses?+

Yes, extensively. In 1998 he designed Burberry's first ready-to-wear jewellery collection, interpreting the house's trademark plaid onto Lucite. His later collaborators include Michael Kors, Jason Wu, Jeremy Scott, Mugler, Phillip Lim and Prabal Gurung, among others. Those partnerships show how widely respected his Lucite craft is across the industry.

Which celebrities wear Alexis Bittar?+

His pieces have been worn by a long list of stars, including Beyoncé, Dua Lipa, Michelle Obama, Iris Apfel, Lady Gaga, Cher and Madonna, many of whom return to his designs repeatedly. That kind of recurring celebrity following speaks to the distinctiveness of his work. The pieces tend to read as artistic statements on the wearer.

What inspired Alexis Bittar's approach to design?+

Bittar grew up around antiques, as both his parents were university professors and antique collectors, and he started selling antique jewellery and vintage clothing as a teenager. That immersion in old objects shaped his eye and his hand-carving skills. The result is a modern aesthetic built on craft sensibilities drawn from the past.

Has Alexis Bittar received industry recognition?+

Yes. He was honoured with the CFDA Accessory Designer of the Year award in 2010, and in 2014 he was named Brand of the Year by the Accessories Council. Those accolades place him firmly among the most respected American accessories designers. They also reflect the consistency of his creative vision over the years.

What product categories does Alexis Bittar make besides jewelry?+

While Lucite jewellery is his signature, the brand has broadened over time. After relaunching in 2021 it expanded into handbags and home décor, building on a long history of design crossovers. Earlier in his career he even created Lucite and steel furniture and limited-edition home wares for museums and major retailers.
