Re-checked daily
Antonio Marras, born in Alghero in 1961, is an Italian fashion designer whose eponymous house turns memory, art and Sardinian roots into layered, romantic clothing.

The son of a fashion-boutique owner, Marras was self-taught and launched his brand in 1987. His breakthrough came in 1996 with a couture collection at the Alta Roma event in Rome, followed by his first ready-to-wear line in 1999. From 2003 to 2011 he served as artistic director of Kenzo before returning fully to his own label. In 2023, Calzedonia acquired 80% of his company, with Marras staying on as creative director. He is also active as a stage costume designer and took part in the 2011 Venice Biennale with the installation Archivio Provvisorio.

Antonio Marras shopping FAQ

Is Antonio Marras worth it?+

If you love clothes that read like a story rather than a logo, Antonio Marras rewards the investment. Each piece carries hand-finished detail and the designer's signature patchwork of fabrics, so you are paying for craft and a point of view rather than a trend. Think of it as wearable narrative from a designer who is as much an artist as a tailor.

Why is Antonio Marras so expensive?+

The price reflects labour-intensive Italian construction and the layered, collage-like detailing that is central to the house. Garments mix checks, florals, brocades and embroidery in ways that take real hands-on time to assemble. You are buying a one-of-a-kind feel, not factory uniformity.

What is Antonio Marras best known for?+

Marras is best known for his poetic patchwork womenswear, layering disparate fabrics, prints and textures into a single romantic, collage-like look. The aesthetic blends military and bucolic references with feminine silhouettes. It is unmistakably his, and it is what made his name.

Where is Antonio Marras from, and how does Sardinia shape the brand?+

Antonio Marras was born in Alghero, on the Italian island of Sardinia, in 1961, and his roots there run through everything he makes. The island's landscapes, traditions and women are a recurring source of inspiration. That sense of place is a big part of why the clothes feel so personal.

When did Antonio Marras launch his brand?+

Marras, who was largely self-taught, launched his own brand in 1987. His breakout moment came in 1996 when he presented a couture collection at the Alta Roma event in Rome. His first ready-to-wear collection followed in 1999.

Was Antonio Marras the designer behind Kenzo?+

Yes. Between 2003 and 2011 Antonio Marras served as artistic director of Kenzo. After that chapter he returned his full attention to his own label, where his distinctive voice has the room to roam freely.

Who owns Antonio Marras now?+

In 2023, the Italian group Calzedonia acquired 80% of the company, with Antonio Marras himself staying on as creative director. So the founder still leads the creative vision while a larger group supports the business side.

Should I start with a dress or a jacket from Antonio Marras?+

Both are strong entry points. A patchwork dress shows off the house signature most vividly, while a reworked jacket, such as a parka or aviator turned romantic with floral inserts, is easier to slot into an existing wardrobe. If you want the most Marras-feeling piece, go for the patchwork; if you want versatility, start with outerwear.

How should I style Antonio Marras pieces?+

Because each piece is already a rich collage of pattern and texture, let it be the centre of the outfit and keep everything else quiet. Pair a busy patchwork dress with simple boots and unfussy accessories. The clothes are the conversation; you just give them space to speak.

Is Antonio Marras really an artist as well as a designer?+

Very much so. Beyond fashion, Marras works as a costume designer for the stage, and in 2011 he took part in the Venice Biennale with an installation called Archivio Provvisorio. That fine-art sensibility is exactly what you feel in the layered, story-driven clothes.

How do I care for an embroidered or patchwork Antonio Marras garment?+

Treat these pieces gently, since they carry hand-applied detail like sequins, beading and mixed fabrics that do not love a washing machine. Specialist dry cleaning and flat or padded-hanger storage will protect the embroidery and keep the layers sitting beautifully. A little care keeps a Marras piece looking couture-like for years.
