Founded in Vancouver in 1984 by Brian Hill, Aritzia describes itself as an "everyday luxury" brand at attainable prices — a Canadian retailer built around its own in-house fashion labels.

The first store opened in 1984 in Vancouver's Oakridge Centre, and the company spread across Canada over the following decades before opening its first US stores in Seattle and Santa Clara in 2007. It went public in 2016 and acquired the menswear brand Reigning Champ in 2021.

What sets Aritzia apart is that it primarily sells its own brands — Wilfred, Babaton, TNA, Sunday Best, Super Puff and more — rather than third-party labels. Its stores are individually designed by in-house architects, and longtime sales-floor-to-CEO Jennifer Wong took the top job in 2022.

Aritzia shopping FAQ

Is the Aritzia Super Puff worth it?+

The Super Puff has become Aritzia's signature piece for good reason. It is the jacket most shoppers reach for first, and the warmth-to-weight ratio is what wins people over once they have one. If you want a single coat that earns its place every winter, this is the one to try before anything else in the lineup.

Why is Aritzia so much more expensive than Zara or H&M?+

Aritzia describes itself as an everyday luxury brand at attainable prices, and the pricing sits deliberately above fast fashion but below designer labels. The difference shows up in materials and construction across its in-house lines, where pieces are built to be kept rather than churned through a season. You are paying for longevity and an elevated finish, not a runway logo.

What is the difference between Aritzia's labels like Wilfred, Babaton, and TNA?+

Unlike most Canadian retailers, Aritzia primarily sells its own in-house brands, each with a distinct personality. Wilfred and Wilfred Free lean refined and feminine, Babaton is the polished, workwear-leaning tailoring line, and TNA is the relaxed, athletic-casual label. Learning the labels is the fastest way to navigate the store, since each one signals a different vibe and price tier.

Which Aritzia piece should I buy first?+

Most people start with the Super Puff for outerwear, but the in-house basics from Babaton and Wilfred are where the brand really shows its value. If you want something you will wear constantly, an elevated everyday staple from one of those lines is a safer first purchase than a trend piece. Start with the label whose aesthetic matches how you actually dress.

Is Aritzia good quality?+

Aritzia is positioned as elevated basics rather than disposable trend pieces, and its premium in-house lines like Babaton and Wilfred emphasize careful tailoring and better fabrics. Quality does vary across the many sub-brands, so it pays to check the label and the material before buying. At its best, the brand delivers pieces that hold up far longer than typical mall fashion.

Who owns Aritzia and who runs it now?+

Aritzia LP was founded by businessman Brian Hill in 1984. In May 2022, Jennifer Wong took over as CEO, replacing Hill, who became executive chair. Wong's story is unusual: she joined the company in 1987 as a sales associate at the Robson Street store in Vancouver before rising to the top job.

Where was Aritzia founded and is it really Canadian?+

Yes, Aritzia is Canadian through and through. It was founded in Vancouver, British Columbia, and opened its first store in 1984 at Oakridge Centre, a mall on Vancouver's West Side. The brand expanded across Canada over the following two decades before opening its first U.S. stores in Seattle and Santa Clara in November 2007.

Why do Aritzia dressing rooms not have mirrors?+

It is intentional. Most Aritzia dressing rooms are designed without mirrors, which nudges shoppers out into a communal mirror space to see how a piece looks. Each store keeps at least one private dressing room with a mirror for anyone who prefers it, so the choice is yours.

Is Aritzia a sustainable or ethical brand?+

Aritzia is known for elevated basics built to last, which favours fewer, longer-lived purchases over disposable trends. That said, it does not market itself on sustainability the way some peers do, so if eco-credentials are your priority you may want to read the brand's own materials closely. Buying its more durable in-house lines and keeping pieces for years is the most sustainable way to shop it.

How does Aritzia compare to Reformation?+

Both sit in the elevated contemporary space, but they aim at different shoppers. Aritzia is built around versatile everyday staples and outerwear like the Super Puff, while Reformation is better known for statement dresses and an eco-conscious story. Choose Aritzia when you want dependable wardrobe foundations, and Reformation when you want a standout occasion piece.

When is the best time to buy Aritzia?+

Outerwear like the Super Puff tends to sell out in core sizes during peak winter, so the most reliable approach is to buy early in the season rather than waiting. For in-house staples that restock regularly, you have more flexibility year-round. If a specific colour or size matters to you, do not gamble on it lingering.

Does Aritzia sell menswear?+

Aritzia is best known as a women's brand, but it broadened its reach in June 2021 by acquiring Reigning Champ, a Canadian menswear-focused athleisure and streetwear label, for $63 million. So while the core Aritzia experience is women's everyday luxury, the company's portfolio now extends into men's casualwear too.
