Diadora is an Italian sportswear and footwear maker based in Caerano di San Marco, in the Veneto, founded in 1948 by Marcello Danieli — the name a likely development of de Iadera, "from Zadar."

Danieli launched the company with mountain-climbing boots, then moved into football in the mid-1970s and into tennis with an endorsement deal with Björn Borg. Through the 1980s and 1990s Diadora became woven into football culture — its shoes a status symbol of British "casual" terrace style, and its boots worn and personalised by stars like Marco van Basten (the San Siro) and Roberto Baggio (the Matchwinner).

The brand also outfitted clubs including AS Roma and made rugby kits for New Zealand's Otago. In 2009 Diadora was bought by Geox founder Mario Moretti Polegato through his family's investment arm, and it continues to supply football kits today, from Norway's Viking FK to a 2025 return to Brazilian football.

Diadora shopping FAQ

Are Diadora football boots worth it?+

For players who prize control and touch over the latest speed-boot tech, Diadora is a genuinely strong pick. The brand leans on Italian craftsmanship and a softer feel on the ball, the kind of boot that settles into weekly football without shouting for attention. If you want clean contact and comfort rather than chasing an ultra-narrow silhouette, it earns its place.

Is Diadora a good quality brand?+

Diadora has a long reputation for quality footwear, and its football heritage runs deep, with stars like Marco van Basten and Roberto Baggio fronting the brand and launching signature boots, the San Siro Van Basten and the Matchwinner. That pedigree, combined with its Italian sportswear roots since 1948, is why the name still carries weight with players and collectors alike.

What's the difference between the Diadora Borg Elite and the N9000?+

They come from two different eras of the brand. The Borg Elite grew out of Diadora's tennis era, tied to its endorsement of Björn Borg, while the N9000 belongs to the brand's later move into running silhouettes. In short, the Borg Elite is the heritage tennis classic and the N9000 is the running-influenced trainer, so pick by the look and lineage you want.

Why did Diadora become a cult brand in football casual culture?+

In the early 1980s, as English clubs played more in continental competitions, Diadora-branded shoes became an essential part of British football casual culture and a real status symbol. Their rarity outside Italy gave wearers prestige among other fans, which is exactly why certain Diadora pieces are still hunted by collectors today.

What is the most iconic Diadora product?+

It is hard to look past its football heritage. Two signature boots in particular, the San Siro Van Basten launched with Marco van Basten in the late 1980s and the Matchwinner launched with Roberto Baggio in the 1990s, define the brand's golden era. For trainer fans, the Borg Elite from the tennis years holds equal status.

Where is Diadora made and where is it from?+

Diadora is an Italian sportswear and footwear company based in Caerano di San Marco in the Veneto region. It was founded in 1948 by Marcello Danieli, and that Italian heritage is central to how the brand is perceived, especially the craftsmanship reputation behind its football and tennis lines.

What does the name Diadora mean?+

The name is likely a development of de Iadera, meaning 'from Zadar', with Iadera being the ancient name of the Dalmatian town. It is a fittingly old-world origin for a brand that started in 1948 by making mountain climbing boots before it ever touched a football pitch.

Who owns Diadora now?+

Diadora is a subsidiary of Geox. In June 2009 it reached an agreement with Geox founder and chairman Mario Moretti Polegato to buy its assets through his family's investment arm, LIR. So while the brand is steeped in mid-century Italian sportswear history, today it sits within the Geox group.

Did Diadora really start out making climbing boots?+

Yes. When Marcello Danieli founded the company in 1948, its very first product was mountain climbing boots, not the football and tennis footwear it later became famous for. The move into football came in the mid-1970s, aided by Roberto Bettega, and tennis followed with the Björn Borg endorsement.

Is Diadora still involved in professional football today?+

Yes, the brand remains active as a kit maker. It currently supplies Norwegian Eliteserien club Viking FK, and in the 2025 season it returned to Brazilian football by providing kits for Coritiba and Náutico. That ongoing presence keeps its football identity alive rather than purely nostalgic.
