Gola is an English sporting-goods brand founded on 22 May 1905 — once the Bozeat Boot Company, based in the Northamptonshire village of Bozeat.

The brand makes mainly tracksuits and trainers, its "Harrier" and "Chase" models especially popular in continental Europe; its 1972 Gola Bag became an international craze. In the early 2000s Gola was relaunched in the UK as a retro sports-fashion brand. It also lent its name to English non-League football, sponsoring the Gola League from 1984 to 1986.

Purchased by the Jacobson Group in 1996, Gola became part of Marubeni's US-based consumer platform in January 2026 while continuing within Jacobson's brand portfolio.

Gola shopping FAQ

Are Gola trainers worth it?+

For everyday retro style, most people find Gola a sensible buy, especially because the look punches above the price. The models people reach for, like the Harrier and the Chase, lean on heritage charm rather than performance tech, so judge them as casual fashion trainers, not sports shoes. If you mainly want the vintage silhouette for daily wear, they deliver.

Is the Gola Harrier good quality?+

The Harrier is one of Gola's signature models and a perennial favourite, particularly in continental Europe. It is built for casual, retro wear rather than serious athletics, so set expectations around looks and comfort for everyday use. As with any heritage trainer, take care of the suede and uppers and it will reward you with that classic Gola profile.

How do Gola trainers compare to Adidas?+

Both play in the retro-trainer space, but they come from very different houses. Gola is a British brand founded in 1905, originally a footwear maker that re-launched in the early 2000s as a retro sports-fashion label aimed at people who remembered it from childhood. The choice really comes down to which heritage silhouette and styling you prefer, since both lean hard on nostalgia.

Which Gola model should I buy first?+

Start with the Harrier or the Chase. These are the models the brand is best known for and that are especially popular across continental Europe. They capture the core Gola retro look, so they are the most natural entry point before exploring the wider range the brand has added over the years.

Where is Gola from?+

Gola is an English sporting-goods brand, founded on 22 May 1905. It was originally known as the Bozeat Boot Company and was based in the Northamptonshire village of Bozeat. That long British heritage is a big part of the brand's retro appeal today.

Why is Gola considered a heritage brand?+

Because it genuinely has the years behind it, dating to 1905. In the early 2000s Gola was deliberately re-launched in the UK as a retro sports-fashion brand, selling to the same people, now grown up, who fondly remembered it from their childhood, but at premium prices. The nostalgia is the strategy, not an accident.

What is the Gola Bag and why does it matter?+

The Gola Bag of 1972 is a piece of brand history. During the 1970s, when Gola's licensing sat under the Electronic Rentals Group, the company developed the Gola Bag, which went on to create an international craze. It is a reminder that Gola's reach extended well beyond trainers.

Who owns Gola now?+

Gola was purchased by the Jacobson Group in 1996, which expanded its range. In January 2026 it was announced that Gola, as part of Jacobson Group, had been acquired by Marubeni Consumer Platform US, a subsidiary of Marubeni Corporation. Gola continues to operate within Jacobson Group's existing brand portfolio and management structure.

Did Gola ever sponsor football?+

Yes. Gola sponsored the Alliance Premier League, then the highest level of English non-League football, from 1984 until 1986. During that period the league was actually known as the Gola League, which speaks to how visible the brand was in British sport at the time.

Is Gola just trainers, or does it make other gear?+

Trainers are the headline, but the company has always been broader. Gola produces mainly track suits and trainers, and after the Jacobson Group purchase in 1996 it expanded its range further. The Gola Bag is the most famous example of the brand reaching beyond footwear.

When is the best time to buy Gola trainers?+

Because Gola is positioned as a fashion-led retro brand rather than a technical sports label, seasonal sale periods are usually the sweet spot for the best value. If you have your eye on a specific colourway of the Harrier or Chase, buy when you find your size, since popular retro colours can sell through.
