F. A. Porsche established the design studio in Stuttgart in 1972 and released the P'6510 that year — the world's first black chronograph. The studio relocated to Zell am See, Austria, in 1974 and, over the decades, lent its functional aesthetic to watches, sunglasses, writing instruments and a wide range of industrial products, even streetcars for the city of Vienna.
The current company, based in Ludwigsburg, was formed in 2003 as a majority-owned subsidiary of Porsche AG. In 2015 the studio was renamed Studio F. A. Porsche in memory of its founder. The brand has collaborated widely, from BlackBerry phones and Huawei's Mate series to Adidas sport and the Porsche Design Tower Miami.
