Story & heritage
Stetson describes the Boss of the Plains as the hat John B. Stetson created in the 1860s on a trip out West, and calls it “the hat that started it all.” In the current line, it remains the clearest bridge between the company’s origin story and a wearable product.
The official product copy frames the Boss as possibly Stetson’s most iconic hat: a functional western silhouette with a deliberately distressed patina, handmade so no two examples share exactly the same color or character.
Materials & craft
The current Boss of the Plains is made from 6X fur felt, then hand-dyed, hand-shaped and hand-distressed. Stetson lists a 4 5/8-inch cattleman crown, 4-inch brim, leather hat band, leather sweatband and satin liner, with production in Garland, Texas.
How to choose & style
Choose it when the hat should read unmistakably western rather than city-fedora. The wide brim and distressed finish carry weight, so it works best with denim, waxed cotton, worn leather and other textures that can stand beside it.
