Story & heritage
Stetson’s current Open Road 6X copy calls it the most popular version of the iconic Open Road and dates the model to 1937. The hat was originally sold with an open crown, then finished from 1948 onward with the hand-pressed cattleman crease now associated with the line.
Its reputation comes from sitting between western and urban dress: the official description points to its western-style crown, shorter 2 3/4-inch bound-edge brim, and history on presidents and trailblazers, including Lyndon B. Johnson at his Texas ranch.
Materials & craft
The Open Road 6X uses Stetson’s proprietary 6X fur-felt blend for stiffness and shape retention. The current version is handmade in the U.S.A. with a 4 1/4-inch cattleman crown, grosgrain band, JBS brand pin, genuine leather sweatband, satin liner and Stetson hat box.
How to choose & style
This is the safest first Stetson: western enough to have character, restrained enough for tailoring, denim or a chore jacket. Fawn and silverbelly are the most flexible; darker colors make the shape feel sharper and more formal.
