Royal Oak Jumbo Extra-Thin
The steel sports watch that made an octagonal bezel, exposed screws and a tapisserie dial feel like high horology.
Story & heritage
The Royal Oak was introduced in 1972 and transformed Audemars Piguet from a discreet complications house into the name most associated with the luxury steel sports watch. Designed by Gérald Genta, its rounded octagonal bezel, visible hexagonal screws, integrated bracelet and textured dial made steel feel as precious as gold.
The Jumbo carries the proportions closest to that first shock: a broad but thin 39 mm case, a minimal time-and-date dial and the integrated bracelet that turns the watch into one continuous piece of architecture.
Materials & craft
This reference uses a stainless steel case with glareproofed sapphire crystal and caseback, water resistance to 50 metres, and a Bleu Nuit Nuage 50 dial stamped with the Petite Tapisserie pattern. The bracelet is stainless steel with an AP folding clasp, alternating brushed planes with polished bevels across the case and links.
How to choose & style
The Jumbo is the purist Royal Oak: thin enough for tailoring, sporty enough for denim, and strong enough visually that it needs little else. Steel with the blue dial is the canonical choice; precious-metal or gem-set versions change the mood, but the silhouette stays instantly readable.
