Story & heritage

In the 1990s, Diana, Princess of Wales was repeatedly photographed with a bamboo-handle Gucci tote — so often that the bag became associated with her name. To keep the bamboo handles standing upright, the original was fitted with thin leather straps that looped around the canes; a practical fix that became a defining detail.

Gucci revived the design in 2021 as the Diana, formally the Bamboo 1991, turning those functional straps into removable neon and tonal leather belts and reintroducing one of the house's most distinctive shapes.

Materials & craft

The Diana pairs a structured leather tote body with twin heat-bent bamboo handles — the same hand-shaped, flame-treated canes that define the house's Bamboo line. The signature leather belts wrap around the base of each handle and can be swapped for different colours. The body holds its open, boxy shape, and a detachable strap converts it for shoulder carry.

How to choose & style

The Diana is the most playful of Gucci's bamboo bags — the swappable neon belts invite colour, while tonal leather versions keep it quiet. The medium is the true tote; the mini reads as an accessory and takes a shoulder strap. Carried in the hand by its upright bamboo handles, it has an unmistakably 1990s posture that the revival leaned into deliberately.
