Story & heritage

The Dionysus debuted in Alessandro Michele's first full collection for Gucci, Autumn/Winter 2015 — the show that announced his romantic, maximalist vision for the house. The bag is named for the Greek god of wine, whose myth tells of his crossing a river on the back of a tiger; that story is told in the bag's signature tiger-head closure, a double-headed spur clasp that hooks the flap shut.

Built most often in Gucci's GG Supreme canvas, the Dionysus became an immediate emblem of the Michele era and one of the most recognisable Gucci bags of the 2010s.

Materials & craft

The body is most often the GG Supreme — a coated, woven canvas printed with the interlocking-G monogram — trimmed in leather and the green-red-green Web. The tiger-head spur closure is cast in antiqued metal with textured detailing, and slides through a keeper to fasten without a magnet. A sliding chain strap allows shoulder or cross-body carry. Suede and embroidered editions appear seasonally.

How to choose & style

The Dionysus reads ornate by design — the tiger clasp and Web stripe make it a statement rather than a quiet carry. The GG Supreme versions are the most enduring; suede and embroidery push it toward evening. The super-mini on a chain is the most wearable for those who find the full size decorative. It sits best against the eclectic, layered dressing Michele built the bag to accompany.
