Gate Bag

The knotted saddle that wears its Spanish leather roots in plain sight.

Story & heritage

The Gate was one of Jonathan Anderson's earliest introductions at Loewe — a compact saddle-crossbody that distilled the house's leathercraft heritage into a single knotted fastening. The bag's front flap is secured by a leather strap that threads through itself and ties in a knot rather than a conventional clasp: a deliberately handmade gesture that keeps the Gate rooted in Loewe's workshop vocabulary.

The Gate Dual variant updated the original with a logo-jacquard shoulder strap — adding a visible brand signal to a bag that had previously kept its Loewe identity to a discreet Anagram emboss on the flap. The Dual version became especially popular as the broader luxury market leaned into branded hardware and straps.

Materials & craft

The Gate is cut from smooth calfskin with hand-painted edges in a contrasting tan or black — a hallmark of Loewe's small leather goods craft. The interior is suede-lined with a single flat pocket. The Anagram is blind-embossed into the flap leather rather than applied in metal, keeping the exterior surface entirely clean. The knotted strap uses no hardware at the point of closure.

How to choose & style

The Mini is the daily-carry size — phone, cards, keys, and a lip product. The Small expands to a full crossbody for a longer day. The jacquard strap on the Dual version makes the house affiliation explicit; if you prefer the bag's more understated earlier identity, the standard Gate with plain leather strap is the call. Tan reads warm and heritage-inflected; black or midnight blue versions push modern and graphic.
