Story & heritage
Jonathan Anderson introduced the Puzzle at the Loewe men's SS15 show in June 2014 — his first new bag shape since becoming creative director the previous year. Loewe had not released a fresh silhouette since the 1980s, and the Puzzle changed everything: within seasons it became an It Bag that repositioned the Madrid house from a heritage name to a global household name.
Each bag is handcrafted in Loewe's atelier from 75 individual leather pieces and takes nine hours to complete. The origami-inspired construction folds down completely flat for travel, then springs back into its three-dimensional form — a feat of Spanish leather craft that made the Puzzle genuinely unlike anything on the market in 2014.
Materials & craft
The Puzzle is cut from smooth or soft-grained calfskin and assembled panel by panel. Loewe's craftspeople stitch the six geometric faces together with precision seaming that allows the bag's silhouette to shift between a boxy top-handle and a compact shoulder carry. The Anagram charm and leather-wrapped hardware are made in-house. Manufacture takes place in Barcelona and Getafe, near Madrid.
How to choose & style
The Small is the consensus sweet spot — generous enough for daily essentials, compact enough to read as an accessory rather than a carry-all. Tan or ecru calfskin integrates into virtually any palette; the boxy silhouette provides structure against soft, draped pieces. For a louder moment, the colourblock versions lean into the bag's sculptural geometry without needing anything more.
